I’d be careful about picking your nose in public, especially in Middlesbrough, England.

Loudspeakers have been attached to seven of the 158 CCTV cameras that pepper the city as a “crime deterrent” initiative.  Instead of helplessly witnessing crimes as they happen, police can now ineffectually yell at the non-caring perpetrators.

  1. I struggle with this…1984 vs real crime prevention. I don’t really want authorities watching over me every second, BUT, I also live in the most dangerous city in California. I think we’re close to 30 homicides this year (for a pop of 100k) and the police usually have NO leads on these cases.

I still think witnesses need to come forward and people in the community need to be more active. But in the meantime, some camera on a street corner might actually capture a murderer on camera.

However, once that camera starts yelling, I think someone will shoot it. Seriously.

  2. Can you imagine the “Reality TV” shows that will spawn from this?

  3. “Those who will give up essential liberty for a little security deserve neither liberty nor security.” -Benjamin Franklin

Fear is a powerful impetus to remove liberty, always has been…don’t be the fool. Educate yourself and stand up for your rights.

Also, if you can, get a conceal and carry permit and wear it in your waistband if you are in the dark while holding your hand there conspicously…makes you less attractive of a target for would be robbers. All the cool kids are doing it in the hood.
    (Just kidding…sort of.)
