Ubuntu Linux

I ran some routine maintenance tasks on my parents’ computer this past weekend while visiting the bay area. During this process, Windows XP crashed… hard. I was unable to boot up. “OS corrupted” was the error of the day. Since, at first, I wasn’t able to find where my dad cleverly hid the Windows XP install CD, I decided to give Ubuntu Linux a shot, as I happened to have the Ubuntu 6.06 LiveCD in my laptop bag.
I had that computer up and running in 20 minutes.
Luckily I had my family’s data on a separate partition. I verified that their data was intact and (much calmer now) began to look for that Windows XP install CD. I eventually found it and began the arduous task of installing Windows.
8 Reboots and 10 hours later I had Windows XP up and running and all patched and service packed.
I hate Windows. I’m starting to really appreciate Linux. Being sick of playing tech-support for my family (who is 4 hours away), I suggested that they get MacBooks. Anything is better than Windows at this point.
Check out Ubuntu Linux if you have some free cycles. Installation is quick and painless.
