Military Commissions Act = End of America?

Here is a video of Olbermann giving a special comment on the “Military Commissions Act” which aired on Wednesday, Oct. 18th 2006.

And if you think this, hyperbole or hysteria, ask the newspaper editors when John Adams was President, or the pacifists when Woodrow Wilson was President, or the Japanese when Franklin Roosevelt was President.

What do you guys think?  Was Habeas Corpus stolen out from under our noses?

Invisibility Cloaks on the Horizon

We’re not quite there yet, but we’re getting there.  A Japanese inventor (pictured above) cheats by making use of a camera mounted on the back of the jacket.  Researches in Scotland have actually created a “meta-material” that can bend microwaves around itself.  Too bad we don’t see anything in the microwave spectrum.

Star-Power in Command & Conquer 3

I can’t ignore the presence of Grace Park and Tricia Helfer in the latest inception of one of the grand-daddies of RTS games.  I’m in.

Self-Propagating Software

So with the latest version of iTunes came the option to install this “Apple Software Update” program which supposedly keeps all your Apple Software up-to-date. I’ve had it installed for awhile now and not a peep came from it until just now. It updated itself. That’s handy. Really handy. Next it will want to play chess with me while singing Daisy.

World of Warcrack

I just read a heartfelt post of a “recovering WoW” player.  His experience with the game sounded too much like plain drug or alcohol addiction.

Blizzard created a game that you simply can not win.

And people put everything on the line for these accomplishments with which they associate much value. I know of children and spouses being forced to play and grind for their parents, threats of divorce, rampant neglect, failing grades in school, and thousands of dollars spent on “outsourcing” foreign help. For what, you ask? Honor. The desire to be the best for at least one week. To get the best loot in the game. What do these “heroes” receive? Why, cheers and accolades of course as they parade along in their new shiny gear… which is obsolete the first time they step into one of the premier instances. The accomplishment and sacrifice itself are meaningless a few days later. Then it’s usually off to the races again.

I know that I have a highly addictive personality so I’ve made it a point to deeply scrutinize any activity I participate in.  I hope that my friends who are WoW players don’t fall into the same holes as the people described in the post.

File Searching w/Google

We all know how wonderful Google is with their cute little search engine.  I doubt that people actually use Google’s search language to its fullest capability.

Here’s an example of how to search for Chopin media files:

-inurl:(htm|html|php) intitle:”index of” +”last modified” +”parent directory” +description +size +(wma|mp3) “Chopin”

Check this page out for more examples.  Also, here is a cheat sheet of operators that Google support.

Performance Laptop Dock by Belkin

What makes this different from your run-of-the-mill universal laptop dock you may ask? Instead of hooking up to your laptop via USB, it connects via your ExpressCard port, effectively “quadrupling” the bandwidth and leaving your USB ports free for other things.

Check it out.
