Video Conversion Made Easy (again… and again)

Lifehacker posted yet another free all-in-one video conversion utility. I haven’t had the need to do anything of this sort lately, but I know that some of you do participate in these dark and arcane rituals. If you decide to give this a try, let us know how it goes!

Wow!!!
You can convert to “RealPlayer” format. How useless is that?
Actually, Real is an excellent codec with only one problem… It’s produced by Realmedia. I still haven’t forgiven them for the war atrocities RealPlayer commited in the late 90′s… It’s too bad, because RM looks very nice for a given bitrate.
…So yeah, I’m definitely one of the Videomancers you alluded to. The main problem with vid compression software is that the proprietary formats don’t like to let you compress to their formats using other software. Divx, Xvid, ogg, mp4, etc… those are easy. But find me free software that can convert to WMV, QT, RM, -and- the others, and then you’ll have something interesting. My general advice is: for most of the free formats, use VirtualDub. For WMV, MS provides a free encoder (though you do have to search for it on MS’s website). QT requires Quicktime Player Pro (costs money). And Real, honestly, I’ve never looked into, but i’m pretty sure it’s not free. But being evil and all, it doesn’t much matter
