Morning Cup O' Joe

Time you enjoy wasting isn't wasted time.

It’s here…

Windows Vista

It’s sitting on my Coffee Table, in a Shinny Plastic Box. I’ll be on vacation next week so I’m holding off on the installation till then.

Kiss my “Windows User ASS”, Steve Jobs!!!

  1. Hehehe… Cool, dude.

You’ll have to write your own review of the upgrade process and what you think of it when it’s up and running.

  2. Here’s a nice little program that will check if your computer is “Vista Ready

So far, it’s a go for the install onto my laptop. There are a few issues that need to be resolved before the install (in other words, programs that have to be uninstalled from my laptop).

    - Small proprietary apps specific to my Dell Inspiron

    - All Norton Software (System Works, Antivirus & Personal Firewall)

    - Nero 7 (although I can reinstall after the upgrade)

Also there are couple of drivers specific to my EXPRESSCard Adapter and Media Card Reader that need to be updated. But that will be resolve after the initial install when Vista does its first on-line update.

So, hopefully this Monday I’ll have Vista Up and Running.

  3. Apparently there is a way to do a “clean install” for Windows Vista. Although it sounds pretty involved, it might be worth doing just to prevent funkiness from a forgotten DLL file somewhere.

  4. oooh. Looks like an OS that came out 4 years ago…

  6. Well… Decided to go ahead and do the upgrade.

It took a little over 1 1/2 hours. Surprisingly, it was a very smooth install. No snags at all, Insert Disc & Go. Mind you it took some prepping of my laptop to do this (refer to my previous reply) and I opted to install Vista 32 (yes, you get two versions in the box, 32 and 64bit) on top of XP instead of a “Clean Install”.

At the very start of the install you will be give the option to “Check for Compatibility On-line” or “Install Now”

I already checked for compatibility so I went ahead and clicked “Install Now”.

At this point the install goes thru a “Compatibility Scan” and flags any issues that need to be addressed before and/or after the installation process.

In my case, I’ve already taken care of the “Before” issues and the “After” issues will be resolve when Vista does its first On-line Update. Then I clicked “Next”

Now you have about an hour to kill while the installation process Copies Files, Gathers Files, Expands Files, Installs Features & Updates, and Completes Upgrade. Your computer will reboot a couple of times, I forget how many.

I killed time by watching CSI on my TiVo.

Final Reboot and now comes the Set-Up. You will be asked to “Choose a username & picture”, set-up Vista’s Automatic Update and set the Date & Time.

Since I opted to Upgrade, I was only asked to do the later two.

Then Vista will go thru a final “Performance Test” and from what I hear from the web, this “Performance Test” will generate a performance number for your computer which can be used to judge application compatibility with future Vista-ready titles.

    Welcome to Vista…

  7. Are you up and running with all the applications that were installed with XP?

How much RAM did you have on that laptop? I heard that 2GB is recommended for Vista.

  8. It’s hard to tell with less than 24hrs of “Run Time”. So far the only thing that has not worked is WinAmp. Also, my LCD Calibration Profile is missing >=(

  9. Photoshop CS2 works fine. I just have to recalibrate my Screen.

  10. Oh… just FYI

    I installed Vista, Commando Style!!!

    That’s right… no underwear! j/k

Don’t do this @ home boys & girls.

I did not back-up anything before installing Vista. The only thing missing after the install was my LCD Calibration Profile.

  11. Here’s an Application Compatibility List.

  12. I’m kinda pissed that Nullsoft’s Winamp does not work with Vista. I hate using Windows Media Player and iTunes just to listen to my MP3s. Winamp is less intrusive and for its size, easier to use. Any media players out there that are similar to Winamp?

  13. Found my LCD Calibration Profile. I just had to Reload it from Pantone’s ProfilesChooser

  14. iTunes DRM issues

Files purchased from iTunes will not play in Vista

    Fortunatly there’s a fix.

  15. It still sounds like Vista needs a good shake down. I’m guessing that like most software, it was pushed out before it was really ready and that only 80% of its intended functionality was put in the shrink-wrapped box.

For something as significant as an OS upgrade (or change), I don’t see any advantage to be an early adopter. In fact, I think being a late adopter is the way to go. I’m sure Vista will be stable when Service Pack 1 is released.

  16. At the risk of being lable a Vista “Fanboy” (actually I think it’s to late for that, I am a Vista “Fanboy”, proud of it too!).

Honestly, it’s not bad for an initial release.

After 3 days, three issues arose after the install.

-Missing LCD Calibration Profile – Was not missing.

-iTunes DRM issue – Fixed with a patch from our friends @ Apple. Thank you Steve Jobs, but you can continue to kiss my “Windows User ASS”.

-Winamp not working – That’s Bummer… Nullsoft should be coming out with a Vista friendly version soon.

  17. Ah Ha!!!

    Winamp works.

Comment by Bernard Manansala | February 5, 2007

  18. Day 5, post upgrade.

All three issues have been resolved; LCD Calibration, iTunes DRM & Winamp.

All the big stuff like Lightroom, Photoshop and MS Office work just fine.

And all the small stuff like Easy CD Extractor, AnyDVD & Clone DVD work.

  19. Alot has been said about how MS Vista copied some of MAC OS X features (The Aero Flip3D Interphase and Gadgets).

But here is something I don’t think Apple has…

    ReadyBoost
