Fingerprint Reading for Your Cellphone

Filed under: Geeks and Gadgetry, Science and Technology — Mike @ 7:40 am

Sharp is developing a VGA touchscreen for mobile phones capable of reading your fingerprint as an added biometric security feature.  Being able to just touch the screen to unlock my phone sounds appealing.  What if you live in Alaska and you don’t want to take off your gloves, though?

iTunes Signature Maker

Filed under: Music, Software — Mike @ 10:34 pm

If you get stumped every time somebody asks you what kind of music you listen to, here’s the tool for you: The iTunes Signature Maker.

This handy little application scours through your iTunes library and makes a mishmash of songs (by most listened to or highest rated) in the form of a 30-second (or more) clip.

Mechanical Hand Plays Classical Piano

Filed under: Geeks and Gadgetry, Music, Oddities, Science and Technology — Mike @ 12:06 pm

Seventeen bucks for a mechanical hand that can play classical pieces?  Is there a matching left hand?

The SnoopStick

Filed under: Geeks and Gadgetry, Science and Technology — Mike @ 7:40 am

If you find the SnoopStick (pictured above) plugged into any computer you use, beware.  Here is yet another device that increases my privacy paranoia.

Here are its major features (from website):

  • Monitor all web site access.

  • Works with all browsers and web enabled programs.

  • Monitor both sides of all “instant messenger”
    communications.

  • Works with all popular IM programs.

  • Monitor all email access (SMTP, POP3, IMAP) to see who and
when emails were received from and sent to.

  • Monitor activities in real time, or retrieve activity logs
from recent activity. SnoopStick records everything, whether
you are monitoring in real time or not.

  • Store up to 12 months of activity logs directly on your
    SnoopStick.
  • All
program modules are updated completely  automatically
so you always have the latest version.
  • Send
the user a pop up message alert. A good way to tell them
    they’re busted!
  • Turn
off/on Internet access with the SnoopStick locally or
    remotely.
  • Set
    allowable times for Internet access.

  • Prevent users from using certain types of Internet programs.

  • Block access to specified ports.

  • Block access to web sites.
  • One
click “Block Social Networking” option instantly blocks
    access to sites like MySpace.com.

  • Completely secure. Only your SnoopStick can access your
computer or change the settings you have chosen.

  • Works with Windows 2000, XP, 2003, and is Vista ready.

Community WiFi Cafe Hotspots - hotspotr

Filed under: General, How-To, Software — Mike @ 2:51 pm

Hotspotr is a community driven site where you can look-up WiFi Cafe hotspots in your area.  I just added Higher Groundz (one of my favorite haunts) to the site.  Great use of the Google Maps API. :)

OpenCongress

This is a great idea.  From the site:

OpenCongress brings together official government information with news and blog coverage to give you the real story behind what’s happening in Congress. Small groups of political insiders and lobbyists know what’s really going on in Congress. Now, everyone can be an insider. OpenCongress is a free, open-source, non-profit, and non-partisan web resource with a mission to help make Congress more transparent and to encourage civic engagement.

How Civil

Looks like these two are getting along nicely.  What were you expecting?  A lightsaber fight?  What else would two gazillionaires talk about?

James Cameron Attempts to Rewrite Bible, Christian Faith

Filed under: News, Television — Mike @ 9:34 am

Not happy with Titanic and Terminator under his belt, James Cameron has decided to join Dan Brown on the list of “Those Who Want To Rewrite the Bible”.

This should be interesting to watch in the least.
