Morning Cup O' Joe

Time you enjoy wasting isn't wasted time.

This is Photoshop on the Atkins Diet

Anyone who uses Photoshop on a regular basis will agree. Too many toys (toolsets & menus) to play with.

Also… WTF!!! $650

Try Adobe Lightroom for $199 thru April; $299 after that.

It’s basically a “Leaned Out” version of Adobe Photoshop. But “Leaned Out” does not mean crippled as is the case with Photoshop Elements.

Lightroom is for photographers who deal with insanely large number of images. It’s a workflow tool that organizes, processes, fixes, prints, and shares. While keeping RAW images (digital negatives) untouched. Which makes sence to those Pro Photogs where Turnover is the key to being profitable.

  1. I’ve been keeping my eye on this. I’m hoping it’ll be included in Adobe CS3.

I wouldn’t exactly call this a replacement for Photoshop. It’s more of a replacement for Bridge. Lightroom enables a photographer to quickly copy files off of memory cards, rename them all (using EXIF data if desired), stamp them all with metadata (like contact info, copyright info and location), and broad, sweeping color management/histogram manipulation, rotation orientation fixing all *non-destructively*.

It also has a nice flagging/rating system to quickly pare down your set of 2000 photos from a job to 200 proofs to present to the client. The client then chooses their favorites from that set of proofs. You take those favorites and do a “final” post-processing (i.e. facial blemish touch-up, background removal, etc.) using Photoshop, and export your final product for printing and/or delivery.

So yeah, it’s not necessarily a replacement for Photoshop. It’s, like you say, a workflow tool to handle large volumes of photos. ;)

  3. I like aperture from Apple but this seems to be good substitute!

  4. Yea, Suresh, this is supposed to directly compete against Aperture. I’ll have to wait a bit longer to see comparisons between the two when Lightroom is officially released. I’ll eventually be switching over to Apple when finances fall into place so there are a lot of things I need to plan out before taking the plunge, like changing a workflow that I’ve developed over the pst couple of years.

This won’t be a light decision.

  5. I’ve been messing w/ Beta 4.1 (haven’t used it since Beta 2) and it’s awesome.

Better than I expected w/ way more functionality than expected. This program completely removes my need for Bridge and has the potential to save a lot of the time spent doing minor adjustments by not having to open Photoshop.

Haven’t tried Aperture yet, but for $199, Lightroom is a steal.

  6. Looks like reviews are starting to come in comparing Aperture and Lightroom.

  7. I’m sold on Lightroom. I just ordered it.

  8. Ahh Haa!!!

    So Lightroom is edging Aperture.

    Take that Steve Jobs. ;)

Lightroom is not for me unfortunately. I just don’t deal with that many images in one sitting. 96 RAW images tops, which fills a single 1GB card from a 12MP DSLR.
