Google’s Hard Drive Survey
Google’s File System is based off of a redundant array of thousands (maybe even millions) of off-the-shelf computer systems each of which having multiple hard drives. You figure that they have amazing statistics on hard drive failure patterns.
You’d be right. Let’s learn from Google.
You can read a summary here if you don’t want to read the entire study.

How do other’s do it?
How about Yahoo?
I’m not sure what Yahoo, does, but I’m sure it’s a very redundant SAN (storage area network) that’s spread out across the country (or even the world, like Google’s).
Amazon S3 has a redundant storage system as well. If Google is looking to be the “operating system” of the internet, Amazon is looking to be the “hard drive” of the internet. Check out Jungle Disk.
Here’s a follow-up article on StorageMojo with more debunking of hard drive myths.
