Universcale

Filed under: General — Mike @ 1:12 am

Here’s a great, interactive Flash application made by Nikon showing a comparative scale of everything in the universe.  You start at the universe level and can maneuver all the way down to the femtometer level.  Pretty neat.

I can see the practicality of this. I just don’t think I could convince my wife to drop $466 for it. :)

Motion Computing’s C5 Medical Tablet PC

Filed under: Geeks and Gadgetry, Science and Technology — Mike @ 7:11 am

This is a great step in the right direction, I think.

My wife tells me stories about all the different hospitals in the area as she does her rotations.  One hospital in particular started using tablet PCs instead of paper charts.  She said it was pretty handy since you didn’t have to worry about losing paperwork.

I’ve worked with a radiologist in the area to do a study on his workflow for my senior project in college.  With the amount of paperwork being shuffled around, it’s a wonder that files don’t get mixed up more often.  A slip of the hand could easily knock over the (literal) stack of papers he was working on.  Misdiagnosis then leads to breaking bad news to a healthy patient, or worse, good news to a terminally ill patient.

If you somehow have a desire to have people stare at your crotch-area for uncomfortably long times, you might want to grab this belt buckle.

Dell Opens Door to Linux

Filed under: Linux, News, Software — Mike @ 12:49 am

Now this is major news.  Considering that Dell is a cornerstone in consumer desktop computing, this move is a major win for Linux and the open-source community.  I wonder how Microsoft is going to punish Dell for this.

Dell has heard you and we will expand our Linux support beyond our existing servers and Precision workstation line. Our first step in this effort is offering Linux pre-installed on select desktop and notebook systems. We will provide an update in the coming weeks that includes detailed information on which systems we will offer, our testing and certification efforts, and the Linux distribution(s) that will be available. The countdown begins today.

Otters Holding Hands

I have no idea if this is normal behavior. I thought it was a fluke at first, but at one point in the video, the couple splits up and then rejoins their hands.

Multitasking Slows You Down

News Flash! Apparently talking (or texting) on the your cell phone while driving is dangerous. According to this article in the N.Y. Times, multi-tasking doesn’t really help your productivity. You might think you’re accomplishing more, but really, our brains aren’t working at peak efficiency if we do a lot of context switching.

That’s something to think about while you are sipping your coffee, talking on your phone and driving.
