“Emotion Engine Chip” pulled out of the 80Gig Playstation 3
What does this mean?
Read on…
“… The 80 GB PS3 will be the first NTSC released PS3 without the PS2 Emotion Engine hardware. We received confirmation from SCEA that the PS3 80 GB model will not use the current PS3′s 20GB/60GB PS2 Emotion Engine hardware, used in running Playstation 2 games on the PS3. “The current 60 GB model utilizes a hardware and solution for backwards compatibility, namely the Emotion Engine chip. The new 80 GB PS3 will use a software solution for backwards compatibility, similar to that currently found in the PAL model,” said Kimberly Otzman, SCEA Corporate Communications Representative.”

Hardware is generally preferable. I’m guessing that the PS3′s hardware is powerful enough to drive software emulation, though.
Also, isn’t the software option cheaper also?

Someone told me the european version without the emotion engine has limited backwards compatibility. I don’t see how this can’t be fixed in software emulation, but emulation is hard to get perfect.
