Southern CA Wildfires

The wildfires down in southern CA are unreal. Is it merely coincidence that so many fires started simultaneously so spread out?
BoingBoing has a plethora of links, including this interactive Google Map of the area.

With all the Television coverage, the word “Arson” has not been mentioned.
Yeah, it is very odd that all these fires just happen to flare up at almost the same time. Not to jump the gun (and everyone knows I have a reputation for that), this may be a case of Eco-Terrorism.
I’ve been down in SoCal often enough to have actually witnessed fires similar to these “upclose”: while I wasn’t in the midst of the flames, they were very visible consuming the hillside right by the freeway we were on, and it was close enough that if we rolled down the windows we would get a blast of intense heat.
Once I even remember coming out to my car the following morning and it being covered with about a 1/4″ thick layer of what at first looked like snow. Of course, it turned out to be ash.
In those two or three times I got stuck down there because of rampant fire, I also don’t remember anyone ever seriously considering arson as a cause. I think the reason for so many simultaneous fires so far away from each other is less likely a madman (or woman!) with a lighter and more likely the natural result of acres of light flora drying out at the same time (due to the ravages of autumn) combined with SoCal’s generally harsher sun.
Add to that the high gusts of wind and you’ve got yourself a flaming martini.
i agree with agalcid. fires like this happen all the time. it’s just that most of them are never as big as this so theres no news coverage. theyre usually too busy looking for car chases
. it’s also that time of the year, hot and dry, mostly dry.
in case youre not familiar with so. cal seasons it’s: floods, earthquake, drought, and fire.
