The Devil’s Night

Filed under: Oddities — agalcid @ 2:54 pm

The church/school that I used to go to would hand stacks of these out, seriously, as an “evangelical activity,” even though they look so ridiculous to most people that you’d have to assume they were printed as a joke.

After growing up in that kind of environment, I really should be (even) more messed up than I am today.

Fortunately for me, though, even as a kid I never came close to taking them seriously. My reaction to them back then was pretty much the same as my reaction to them today: “WTF?” I remember I used to try to collect one of each “comic” they made to see how much more ridiculous they would get.

Some other notably ridiculous ones:

  • Are Roman Catholics Christians?: “Religion can’t save, only Jesus can!”
  • Last Rites: “When this Catholic dies, he learns that his church couldn’t save him.”
  • Fairy Tales: “They were just fantasy games … all in fun. But they influenced Harry to make the biggest mistake of his life.”
  • Who Is Allah?: “The message of ‘Allah Had No Son’ redrawn for black readers.”

The point I’m trying to make by linking to these is that as ridiculous as they may seem, there are actually people (lots of them!) out there who actually believe this stuff, wholeheartedly and without question.
I’m moving to Japan.

GrandCentral: one phone number to rule them all?

Filed under: Geeks and Gadgetry, General, Software — Dave Cumberland @ 11:58 am

I first stumbled across GrandCentral earlier this week on lifehacker’s top 10 Google products you forgot about. Now lifehacker has published a screenshot tour of the site.

It looks like GrandCentral offers all sorts cool features.  They give you a single phone number to give out that you can route to your actual phone lines in several interesting ways.  For example, you can have GrandCentral ring all of your phones when your mom calls.  Or, you could send telemarketers directly to your voice mail.  Better yet, you can give your spam calls the “this number is no longer in service” message!

Unfortunatly, they are currently in a closed beta mode and there is no information about how much their service will cost.

Echo; New Joss Whedon Series Starring Eliza Dushku!

Filed under: News, Rants, Television — Mike @ 9:51 am

Breaking news! Fox Network signed a seven episode contract with Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku for a new television series.  Here’s a synopsis:

Echo (Eliza Dushku) [is] a young woman who is literally everybody’s fantasy. She is one of a group of men and women who can be imprinted with personality packages, including memories, skills, language—even muscle memory—for different assignments. The assignments can be romantic, adventurous, outlandish, uplifting, sexual and/or very illegal. When not imprinted with a personality package, Echo and the others are basically mind-wiped, living like children in a futuristic dorm/lab dubbed the Dollhouse, with no memory of their assignments—or of much else. The show revolves around the childlike Echo’s burgeoning self-awareness, and her desire to know who she was before, a desire that begins to seep into her various imprinted personalities and puts her in danger both in the field and in the closely monitored confines of the Dollhouse.

Oh, and P.S. to all you fans of writer/producer Tim Minear (Angel, Wonderfalls, Firefly, Drive). He tells us: “Joss has pathetically begged me to be involved. And I hate to see a slightly younger man weep like a girl. So I said, ‘m’kay.’ I’ll be playing with dolls one way or t’other.”

Interesting premise.  Then again, I fell in love with a series about a teenaged Vampire Slayer.  It’s Joss Whedon and Tim Minear, so I already love this show.  I’m very surprised that Joss is willing to deal with Fox considering how Firefly was axed.  Either way, this news lights up my day and gives me hope for quality television programming… or at least seven episodes’ worth of quality television programming.

This could be the one reason to hop back onto the cable TV bandwagon.  Or I guess I could wait until Fox opens one of its three mouths and sings the song that ends Earth and just get the seven-episode DVD collection.

Thanks for the tip, Irwin!

Next-gen Credit Cards

 Www.Engadget.Com Media 2007 10 Credit-Card-Screen-Keypad
The core concept above allows a user to generate a one-time use code for online transactions. I think that they should take this a step further and actually require the user to input their PIN before swiping the card for any transaction. That way, if anyone steals the card, at least they wouldn’t (theoretically) be able to use it.
