How To Swap Hard Drives with the Aid of Time Machine

Gizmodo has a nice guide on how to upgrade that MacBook (Pro) hard drive with the help of Leopard Time Machine. Now you just have to decide whether upgrading to that 320 GB drive (or one of those snazzy solid-state drives) is worth voiding your warranty.

  1. Swapping out drives voids the warranty?!?

Come to think of it swapping out anything on any computer, PC or Mac, voids the warranty.

Maybe I shouldn’t get a Mac. Can you bring your Mac to an Apple Store and have them do it?

  2. As I understand it, if you’re upgrading on a MacBook (which has a user-replaceable HD panel) it shouldn’t (reassuring, right?) void your warranty. As for the MacBook Pro, no such luck. Don’t know about the desktops.

Apparently the best thing to do is to have a “Genius” do it and make sure they register their touching of the computer (which they should do automatically). That way, if something wonky happens later, Apple can’t blame your new problem on the chance that you screwed something up during your install.

Either way, I think the most prudent course here is to A) Buy the computer with a large HD to begin with or B) Use an external for all that extra data that you don’t need every day.
