Frotz; Classic Text Adventures on Your iPhone

Now here’s a little bit of awesome for your iPhone. And it’s free!
Handy iPhone Apps
The iPhone has made itself an integral part of my day-to-day life–so much so that it has its own category now on MCOJ! <cue fanfare>
I have a ton of apps installed right now, but I’d say about 90% of them are still “being evaluated.” There are a few, though, that have made the cut to “handy” or I daresay “must have” for me, and by that I mean that I use these apps on almost a daily basis:
EverNote
What is it?
Evernote is an all-purpose, easy-to-use note taking application. Besides your usual run-of-the-mill note-taking functionality, Evernote runs OCR over your photo notes (even handwritten ones) making them available for general text searches. The caveat, of course, is that the OCR is run on their servers, so your notes have to sync with your web account first to get queued up.
There is a desktop version of the app, along with a web app. Everything gets synced via the account you create.
How much does it cost?
Free. You could upgrade to a premium account which will up your bandwidth, storage, and priority on the OCR queue.
Pandora
What is it?
Pandora is a music-streaming app that works great on both generations of iPhones. You can link your iPhone app with your Pandora account if you want to keep your radio stations in sync. I find myself using this app more than my own tunes. Thank goodness for the unlimited data plans.
How much does it cost?
Free.
PhotoCalc
What is it?
A photographer’s best friend. It has quick references, guides and calculators that come in handy for photographers in the field.
How much does it cost?
$3. C’mon, you spend more on a burger nowadays.
High Speed Photography

This is geek photography at its best.
This photography/engineer created the laser trigger and 500 microsecond flash to get those amazing high-speed shots.
Bacon in a Can
Any brave volunteers out there that want to give this stuff a shot and report back to us (from the hospital)?
It’s worth checking out Gizmodo’s 10 Gadgets For Guys Who Hate To Cook — where I found the above.
Hacking an Interview
Though this is presented as a how-to for technical interviews, I believe that the content of this 5-minute presentation can be applied to all interviews (and social situations!).
It’s plainly obvious that technical merit alone will not land you a job. For all of you interviewers/managers out there: What’s the percentage breakdown of merit vs. personality for your ideal candidate?

What’s Keeping Me?

I think that a universal operating system law should go into effect that requires OS developers to notify the user exactly which process or program has its vice-like grip on the file/folder you want to delete (or the device you want to eject).
Luckily, there are handy little apps like What’s Keeping Me (for OS X) that help you out of these annoying situations.
