Morning Cup O' Joe

Time you enjoy wasting isn't wasted time.

I have found my reading list for winter

Wowio logo

This is an amazing repository of books and comics. I’ve been downloading a lot of their comics lately and my queue has grown to over 200 items in waiting. I’ve also started to explore some classic literature such as The Art of War and The Hound of the Baskervilles. You are limited to 3 downloads a day but so far that hasn’t been a bottleneck with the way I read. What do you think of a service like this? Will it last? Is it a viable business model?

From their site:

WOWIO is a new kind of online bookstore that enables readers to download ebooks for free, using commercial sponsorships to compensate authors and publishers. Readers get free ebooks. Sponsors get a powerful new channel to communicate their message to precisely the people they want to reach. Publishers get a new means of distributing their books, expanding their readership, and monetizing their intellectual property.”

Lyrid Meteor Shower – this weekend!

While usually not one of the most spectacular night time displays, the Lyrid meteor shower can be amazing. Emanating from the constellation of Lyra (the Harp), the shower is expected to peak at 10-15 meteors per hour on April 22-23. Best viewed after midnight, once the moon has set. Not going to be in a good viewing location this weekend? Try another meteor shower later this year!

How to destroy the Earth… no, really

Destroying the Earth is harder than you may have been led to believe.

You’ve seen the action movies where the bad guy threatens to destroy the Earth. You’ve heard people on the news claiming that the next nuclear war or cutting down rainforests or persisting in releasing hideous quantities of pollution into the atmosphere threatens to end the world.

Fools.”

Look at the size of those things…

Naica Crystal Cave

http://pruned.blogspot.com/2007/03/giant-crystal-caves-of-naica.html

“The largest natural crystals on Earth have been discovered in two caves within a silver and zinc mine near Naica, in Chihuahua, Mexico,” a Discovery News article reprinted here tells us. “Reaching lengths of over 20 feet, the clear, faceted crystals are composed of selenite, a crystalline form of the mineral gypsum.”

For those of you that own a Mac and like manipulating music, this may be just the thing. He’s also looking for someone to do a Windows version – anyone up for it?

NASA – Hinode sun project

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/solar-b/index.html

Japan, US, UK and Europe space agencies are all contributing to this mission to further investigate the sun’s behavior. I thought the Corona Spawns Explosions video was especially impressive.
