Microscopic Sculptures
The ship on the left is a hand-crafted sculpture by Willard Wigan. The thread and needle on the right is for scale comparison.
I echo Darren’s sentiment of: Whoa.
"You have to control the whole nervous system, you have to work between the heartbeat – the pulse of your finger can destroy the work." Wigan uses a tiny surgical blade to carve microscopic figures out of rice, and fragments of grains of sand and sugar, which are then mounted on pinheads. To paint his creations, he uses a hair plucked from a dead fly (the fly has to have died from natural causes, as he refuses to kill them for the sake of his art). His sculptures have included a Santa Claus and a copy of the FIFA World Cup trophy, both about 0.005mm tall, and a boxing ring with Muhammad Ali figure which fits onto the head of a match.”
Nice find, Darren!

Surgical Tools of Old
I wonder which surgical tools of today will elicit the same visceral response that we get when we see these surgical tools of the past.

DTXTR – Teenage TXT Translation Tool
This is a completely serious website aimed at educating parents on the completely indecipherable SMS shorthand affectionately referred to as TXTing to the youth of today.
ROFLMAO.
In all seriousness, though, I think this is a potentially handy reference for people, IMHO.

Take a Closer Look
Do you see anything unusual about the photo of the girl above? Really? Take a closer look.
Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling Festival
We need more weird festivals like the Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling Festival. Happy Friday!
Scanwiches

Not really much to say here–it’s pretty self-explanatory:
Delicious sandwich + flatbed scanner = Scanwiches.com
Meat + Lasers = Meat Cards

I imagine these would be awkward to carry in your wallet.
We start with 100% beef jerky, and SEAR your contact information into it with a 150 WATT CO2 LASER.
Screw die-cutting. Forget about foil, popups, or UV spot lamination. THESE business cards have two ingredients:
MEAT AND LASERS.
Unlike other business cards, MEAT CARDS will retain value after the econopocalypse. Hoard and barter your calorie-rich, life-sustaining cards.

Lens Envy

The Sigma 200-500 f/2.8 EX DG is a monster lens. To hand-hold this 35 lb. monster is nuts. The photographer above was just proving that he could (though he admits that this isn’t the best way to take photos with this lens):
I always handhold my Canon 600 f/4 IS and some time ago I was asked if I can handhold the Sigma monster…yes, I can
but obviously it is just for fun; I can handhold it just for few minutes, and I need very fast SS to get sharp photos. The photos taken during the test had been taken on the sturdy Gitzo tripod.
Thanks for the link, Bernard!

World’s Largest Piano
From Make:
Adrian Mann has built what’s being called the world’s largest piano, measuring in at over 18.5 feet long! He began work on the project at the age of 16 and continued construction in a local barn over the next four years. It seems all his hard work was worth it considering the instruments commanding voice.
Man, I wasted my youth.
Nice find, Irwin!
