hello my name is mark Lomas and I’m a
lecturer in journalism at Middlesex
University Dubai I teach on the
journalism media and journalism and
communications programs one thing I
always tell my students right from the
very start of their university
experience is that coming out of
university with just a degree
certificate just that piece of paper is
not enough there’s lots of people out
there competitive now a lot of people
are going to university a lot of people
have degrees so it’s what you do beyond
the classroom the experiences that you
get beyond the clashing that are really
going to help you stand out to that
intensive purposes we make the the
journalism program here at Middlesex
very practical in nature students are
able to go out and get experience of
being journalists of getting media
accreditation at events of feeling what
it’s like to be a member of the media
here in the UAE and beyond that we
always advise our students to take on
internship experiences as well we’re
lucky here in the UAE there’s some
fantastic publications some fantastic
organizations in terms of media in terms
of journalism and and because it’s quite
a small market if you get out there and
you make an impression your name and
your reputation will be spread around
and we’ve seen that a lot of our
students have had some fantastic
experiences even though they’re only 18
19 20 21 and they’re out there working
for huge publications places like Forbes
and vogue and timeout and big global
brands and global publications so I’m
always saying you know have they had
these experiences with the internships
it’ll stand you in good stead after
university and it’s you know we’ve
integrated practical experience into the
course but it’s still I don’t think that
that’s enough and we always say to the
students they have you know several
months over the summer in terms of
summer holidays they have a Christmas
break as well take those opportunities
to go and seek out some practical work
experience and we find that those
students who go and take up those
internships and experiences through
University firstly they do better on the
course because they’re well equipped
they they’re taking the theory that they
learn in the classroom and they’re
applying it to practical situations so
we find that there
forming better in class also they’re
more likely together as opportunities
after they graduate as well so we’re
really pushing this at this practical
experience this industry experience and
