Echo; New Joss Whedon Series Starring Eliza Dushku!

Breaking news! Fox Network signed a seven episode contract with Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku for a new television series.  Here’s a synopsis:

Echo (Eliza Dushku) [is] a young woman who is literally everybody’s fantasy. She is one of a group of men and women who can be imprinted with personality packages, including memories, skills, language—even muscle memory—for different assignments. The assignments can be romantic, adventurous, outlandish, uplifting, sexual and/or very illegal. When not imprinted with a personality package, Echo and the others are basically mind-wiped, living like children in a futuristic dorm/lab dubbed the Dollhouse, with no memory of their assignments—or of much else. The show revolves around the childlike Echo’s burgeoning self-awareness, and her desire to know who she was before, a desire that begins to seep into her various imprinted personalities and puts her in danger both in the field and in the closely monitored confines of the Dollhouse.

Oh, and P.S. to all you fans of writer/producer Tim Minear (Angel, Wonderfalls, Firefly, Drive). He tells us: “Joss has pathetically begged me to be involved. And I hate to see a slightly younger man weep like a girl. So I said, ‘m’kay.’ I’ll be playing with dolls one way or t’other.”

Interesting premise.  Then again, I fell in love with a series about a teenaged Vampire Slayer.  It’s Joss Whedon and Tim Minear, so I already love this show.  I’m very surprised that Joss is willing to deal with Fox considering how Firefly was axed.  Either way, this news lights up my day and gives me hope for quality television programming… or at least seven episodes’ worth of quality television programming.

This could be the one reason to hop back onto the cable TV bandwagon.  Or I guess I could wait until Fox opens one of its three mouths and sings the song that ends Earth and just get the seven-episode DVD collection.

Thanks for the tip, Irwin!

  1. With this recent insurgence of Sci-Fi on network television (Heroes, Bionic Woman, Chuck, Journeyman, Ghost Whisperer, Moonlight, Reaper) I was wondering when Joss would get back in the boob tube game.

    Speaking of Eliza Dushku…

Whatever happened to her show, “Tru Calling”?

  3. This sounds really interesting to me, as it has three elements that alone would already require my immediate attention: 1) a new show by Joss Whedon, 2) with Tim Minear writing, and 3) (anything) Eliza Dushku, who is the hotness.

Given that I am looking forward to it, and it actually seems like a really intriguing premise for a show, I give it like 3 or 4 episodes before it’s canceled.
