Edmunds.com has a great 9-part series, Confessions of a Car Salesman, about a journalist who went undercover “by working at two new car dealerships in the Los Angeles area.” It’s a long read, but it gives an interesting and accurate insight into what goes on in a car dealership.

I received this link from Angelo. He had a temporary stint as a (very successful) car salesman. He vouches for the authenticity of the content of this series.

Great find, Angelo!

  1. Yup, my experience was almost word for word the same, from the author’s experience at the “high pressure/volum” dealership. I was called a “Green Pea.” I saw managers tell salesmen to “get more money out of customers,” and complain about customers who were actually educated (like pretty much everyone in my life who would go car shopping).

I think really, if I had to find one difference, it was that at our Friday morning 8:00am “sales meetings,” if you didn’t show up on time (like, to the second), you had two choices: either sing a song in front of everyone, or be fired on the spot. I think it only ever happened three times that I can remember, twice the guy sang a song, and once he seemed to think the whole thing was a joke and the GM fired him.
